Short answer
A clean car looks cared for and is easier to photograph and show. An exterior detail and a full interior usually make the biggest visible difference. Detailing will not fix chips, dents or deep scratches, so set expectations accordingly.
Why detail before selling?
First impressions matter. A clean vehicle looks like it was looked after, photographs better for a listing and is more pleasant to test drive. It also removes small distractions (stains, smells, cloudy paint) that make buyers wonder what else was neglected.
Which services make the biggest difference?
Outside, an exterior detail with a polish brings back gloss that a wash can't, and sealed paint looks deeper in photos. Inside, a full interior handles stains, pet hair and the crumbs in the seat seams. Together, they usually make the most visible difference.
What can't detailing fix?
Detailing can't fix rock chips, dents, curb rash on wheels or scratches that go through the clear coat. Some stains and odors are permanent. Being honest with buyers about those is better than hoping a detail hides them.
When should I schedule it?
Close to when you take listing photos or bring it to the dealer, so it's still clean when it matters. Give yourself a few days of buffer in case the shop's schedule is full.
