Highway 2 and mountain trips: getting winter road treatment and pass grime off
Short answer
Winter road treatments and pass grime cling to the lower body, wheels and underside, and can speed up corrosion if left sitting. Rinse or wash soon after trips, focusing low on the vehicle, and use a decontamination wash at the end of winter. A sealant or ceramic coating makes the grime release more easily.
What ends up on my car after a mountain trip?
Roads over the passes are treated in winter to keep them safe, and those treatments, mixed with sand, slush and road grime, spray up onto your vehicle. It collects most on the lower doors, rocker panels, wheels, wheel wells and underside.
Why shouldn't it sit on the vehicle?
Many winter road treatments are salt based and hold moisture against metal. Left in place, they can speed up corrosion on exposed metal, brake parts and the underside. The grime also bonds to paint over time and dulls it.
What's the best way to clean it off?
Wash soon after the trip, ideally within a few days. Focus on the lower half of the vehicle, the wheels and wheel wells. If you use a self-serve or touchless wash, an underbody rinse helps flush the underside. Avoid scrubbing gritty panels with a dry towel, which drags grit across the paint.
At the end of winter, a decontamination wash removes the bonded grit and iron particles a normal wash leaves behind.
Does protection help?
Yes. A sealant or ceramic coating gives the paint a slick surface so grime has a harder time sticking and washes off more easily. It doesn't replace washing, but it makes each wash quicker and gentler. Learn more about coatings at Seattle Ceramic Coatings.
At APC Auto Spa
APC washes by hand using a rinseless or waterless method, which is gentle on paint and uses a fraction of the water. It cleans the painted surfaces, wheels and lower body you can see, so for heavy underbody buildup after a winter of pass trips, an underbody rinse at a self-serve or touchless wash is a good complement.
For the paint, a Decontamination Wash at the end of winter or an Exterior Detail with a fresh sealant before the next one are both good options. See APC Auto Spa's detailing page.
Frequently asked questions
- How soon after a pass trip should I wash?
- Within a few days is ideal. The longer winter road grime sits, the more it bonds and the longer it holds moisture against metal.
- Does rain wash road treatment off?
- Rain helps a little on top surfaces, but it doesn't clean the lower body, wheel wells or underside well. A proper wash is still needed.
- Will a ceramic coating stop corrosion underneath?
- No. Paint coatings protect painted surfaces. They don't treat the underside of the vehicle.
