What is a decontamination wash, and does my car need one?

Short answer

It is a wash followed by chemical iron removal and a clay treatment, a bit like a facial for your paint. If the paint feels rough after washing, or you see tiny orange specks, it likely needs one. Most cars benefit about once a year, and it is the right prep before any polish, sealant or coating.

What does a regular wash leave behind?

Washing removes loose dirt. It doesn't remove contamination that has bonded to the paint. Brake dust contains tiny iron particles that stick to paint (especially on lighter colors and the lower half of the car), and road grit and overspray can lodge in the clear coat.

How do I know if my car needs one?

Try the bag test. After washing, put your hand inside a thin plastic sandwich bag and lightly glide it across the hood or a door. If it feels like fine sandpaper instead of glass, there's bonded contamination. Small orange or rust colored specks, especially on white or silver paint, are another sign.

Another clue: water stops beading or sheeting the way it used to, even right after a wash.

What happens during the decontamination step?

After a wash, an iron remover is applied. It reacts with iron particles and dissolves them so they rinse away (it often turns purple as it works). Then a clay treatment glides over the lubricated paint and pulls out whatever is still embedded. The result is paint that feels smooth and clean.

Why does it matter before a polish, sealant or coating?

Sealants and coatings bond best to clean, bare paint. Applying them over bonded contamination is like painting a wall without cleaning it first. That's why a decontamination step is built into every exterior detail and coating.

Frequently asked questions

Can a decontamination wash damage paint?
When done properly with plenty of lubrication, no. The clay step is gentle, and the iron remover is designed for automotive paint.
Does a ceramic coated car need decontamination?
Yes, from time to time. Contamination can build up on top of a coating and make it seem like it stopped working. A decontamination wash usually brings the water beading back.
How often should I get one?
About once a year is right for most cars. Cars that see a lot of highway miles or winter driving may benefit more often.
