How often should you detail a car in Snohomish County?

Short answer

Wash every two weeks if you can, monthly at a minimum. Plan a decontamination wash about once a year and an exterior detail when the paint looks dull or before winter. Interiors depend on use: a commuter may need a cleaning a couple of times a year, a family or pet vehicle more often.

Decontamination washAbout once a year

InteriorA couple of times a year for commuters, more often for family or pet vehicles

Why does washing frequency matter so much here?

Our wet months keep cars dirty. Road film, winter road treatments and grime sit on the paint for weeks at a time if nobody washes them off. Regular washing is what keeps that grime from slowly dulling the finish.

Snohomish County drivers also tend to put on more miles, with longer commutes and weekend trips over the passes, which means more road grime per week than a short city commute.

How often does the paint need more than a wash?

A decontamination wash once a year removes the bonded grit a wash can't. An exterior detail with polish and sealant makes sense when the paint looks dull or swirled, or as a fall reset before the wet season. A sealant wears over months, so renewing it before winter keeps grime releasing easily.

How often should the interior be detailed?

It depends on how the vehicle is used. A solo commuter car may only need an interior cleaning a couple of times a year. A vehicle that carries kids, dogs, sports gear or muddy boots will need it more often. See interior detailing for the do-everything family vehicle.

What about households with several vehicles?

Many households here have more than one vehicle: a daily driver, a truck, maybe a weekend car or a van. They don't all need the same schedule. The daily driver needs the most frequent washing, while a garaged weekend car needs less. See weekend and garage cars.

At APC Auto Spa

For a ceramic coated car, APC recommends a hand wash as the best option, with touchless as the next best. Wash every two weeks if possible, monthly at a minimum, and never use brush or friction washes.

APC memberships are built around a regular schedule. See is a wash membership worth it or APC's membership page.

Frequently asked questions

Is once a month enough?
Monthly is the minimum. Every two weeks is better, especially through the wet months when grime builds up quickly.
Are brush car washes okay between details?
Brush and friction washes can leave fine scratches and swirls. A hand wash is best, and a touchless wash is the next best option.
When is the best time of year for an exterior detail?
Fall is a good time, so the paint goes into the wet season clean and sealed. Any time the paint looks dull is a good time too.
