Weekend and garage cars: keeping a car that sits looking its best
Short answer
A car that sits still collects dust, and wiping dust off dry scratches the paint. Keep it covered or garaged, wash it properly rather than dusting, and protect it with a sealant or ceramic coating. A decontamination wash once a year and an occasional polish keep it looking its best.
Why does a garaged car still get dirty?
Garages are dusty. Dust, pollen from an open door and residue from things stored nearby all settle on a parked car. A car that sits for weeks can look surprisingly dull, even though it hasn't moved.
Is a quick detailer spray and towel enough?
For a light layer of dust, a good quick detailer and plenty of clean microfiber towels can be fine if you're gentle. But thicker dust is abrasive. Wiping it off dry, or with a feather duster, drags it across the paint and causes fine scratches. When in doubt, wash it.
Should I use a car cover?
Indoors, a soft, breathable car cover keeps dust off. Put it on a clean car only, since a cover over a dusty car can rub dirt into the paint. Outdoors is trickier: a cover that flaps in the wind or traps moisture can do more harm than good.
How do I keep it looking its best long term?
Protect the paint with a sealant or ceramic coating so dust and grime release easily. Plan a decontamination wash about once a year, and an exterior detail or paint correction when swirls start to show.
