Tree sap, bird droppings and pollen: what to do and when

Short answer

Remove bird droppings as soon as possible because they are acidic and can etch clear coat, especially in sun and heat. Soften them first and lift gently, never scrub dry. Remove sticky sap early with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber towel, and rinse or wash gritty pollen rather than wiping it dry. A sealant or ceramic coating helps all three release more easily, but does not make paint immune.

Why should bird droppings come off right away?

A vehicle parked at home under trees, on a driveway or on acreage can collect droppings while it sits. Bird droppings are acidic and can etch clear coat, especially when sun and heat warm the panel. Remove them as soon as possible, rather than waiting for the next scheduled wash.

On a cool panel, soften the residue with a soaked microfiber towel or a suitable quick detailer. Let it soften, then lift it gently with a clean towel. Repeat if needed. Never scrub dried droppings across the paint.

How do I remove tree sap without damaging paint?

Sap is sticky and hardens over time, so early removal is easier. Dampen a microfiber towel with 70% isopropyl alcohol, hold it on the sap for a moment to soften it, then gently wipe it away. In a pinch, hand sanitizer works too. Work on a cool surface and wash the area afterward. Avoid scraping or picking at hardened spots.

Never use the rough, scouring side of a kitchen sponge on paint. We've seen it scratch paint beyond repair too many times.

If gentle treatment does not release the sap, stop rather than forcing it. Bonded residue may need a decontamination wash, and marks left in the finish may need polishing.

Can I wipe pollen off a parked car?

Pollen is gritty. Wiping it dry drags particles across the paint and can leave fine scratches. Rinse or wash it off with plenty of lubrication instead. The same care applies to a daily driver on a driveway and a weekend car that sits near an open garage door. If pollen has dried on and won't rinse off, the same 70% isopropyl alcohol and microfiber method works.

Does a sealant or coating prevent stains and etching?

A sealant or ceramic coating makes sap, droppings and pollen release more easily, but the paint is not immune. Prompt removal still matters. For every vehicle, APC recommends hand washing as the best option, touchless next best, every two weeks if possible and monthly at a minimum. Avoid brush and friction washes.

Clay in a decontamination wash can remove remaining bonded residue, and the service finishes with a sealant. If etching or sap stains remain, the single-stage polish in an exterior detail may improve them. Deeper etching may need paint correction, and some damage is too deep to remove safely.

At APC Auto Spa

APC's Hand Wash, Decontamination Wash and Exterior Detail handle sap, bird droppings and pollen according to what remains on the paint. A Decontamination Wash is wash plus clay, with iron remover when needed, and finishes with a sealant. An Exterior Detail adds a single-stage polish and also finishes with a sealant. Paint correction for deeper etching is quoted on site and billed by the hour.

See APC Auto Spa's detailing page for the available services.

Frequently asked questions

How soon should I remove bird droppings?
As soon as possible. They are acidic and can etch clear coat, especially in sun and heat. Soften them with a soaked microfiber or suitable quick detailer and lift gently, never scrub dry.
Can I scrape hardened tree sap off?
No. Scraping can damage paint. Hold a microfiber towel dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol on the sap to soften it, then wipe gently. Hand sanitizer works in a pinch. Never use the scouring side of a kitchen sponge.
Is it safe to wipe pollen off without washing?
Avoid dry wiping. Pollen is gritty and can scratch the finish when dragged across it. Rinse or wash it off instead.
Will a decontamination wash remove etched marks?
Clay can remove bonded residue, but it does not repair etching. An exterior detail adds polishing, and deeper etching may need paint correction. Some damage is too deep to remove safely.
